Kerry tab by Hall And Oates
Guitar Tab
This is entirely my own work, done on 1/23/06 with a Fender Guitar in hand. "Kerry" - Hall & Oates From the album "Bigger Than the Both Of Us" This is a great song from a pretty unknown H&O album. Chord wise, it's pretty simple, classic Daryl Hall stuff. But there's about 3 guitars intertwined throughout the song that play some cool stuff, in addition to the bass/drums/electric piano and so forth. But what I'm attempting to do here is somewhat dissect the song as it was played. If you want to play a simple,
solo rendition, all of these chords are common "open" position
chords, and can be played as so (Daryl Hall no
doubt wrote it on a piano or keyboard of some sort, so that's
probably the best bet for a "solo" version).
At any rate, I like to try and tab out what is actually being played
on the record. Unfortunately, I just
started playing guitar last August..so I'm still largely a novice.
Thus, I can't guarantee authenticity of any
of this..but it's as close as I can get for now! Here goes:
Synthesizer Intro:
G F (x2)
Verse:
Am D
(These two chords repeat throughout)
One of the guitars is playing lead, with a bunch of cool little riffs
like this one, which comes in at the
beginning of the first verse:
E-------5p3------------------------------------------------------
B------------5--3s1----------------------------------------------
G---------------------0---2v--------------------------------------
D----------------------------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------------
It's mostly G-major/E-minor pentatonic based stuff.
Another guitar plays the chords. I'm not positive, but these
positions sound close:
E-------5---------5------------------------------------------------
B-------5---------7------------------------------------------------
G-------5---------7------------------------------------------------
D-------7---------7------------------------------------------------
A-------7---------5------------------------------------------------
E-------5---------5------------------------------------------------
Am D
Pre-Chorus:
C G/B (x3)
F C D
Carry on..
On this part, for the C G/B progression, I can hear one guitar
playing arpegios of these triads:
E----------------------------------------------------------------
B------13--------12----------------------------------------------
G------12--------12----------------------------------------------
D------14--------12----------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------------
C G/B (this is technically just a G arpegio, as the
bass covers the B)
Chorus:
G D/G C G/B Am (those last 3 chords are quick)
Oh kerry..
G D/G CCC G CCCG C
oh kerry..
More arpegios in the chorus, mainly with these two chords:
E----------------------------------------------------------------
B-----12----10---------------------------------------------------
G-----12----11---------------------------------------------------
D-----12----12---------------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------------
G D/G C G/B Am
Verse 2:
Am D
Same as before. Heres a cool "falling" riff at the beginning of the
second verse:
E----------------------------------------------------------------
B-----5s3s5--5--3------------------------------------------------
G------------------5--2------------------------------------------
D------------------------5--4------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------------
Pre-Chorus/Chorus is all the same. Then, the synth intro repeats.
The song then modulates from the key of G to the key of Bb as
follows:
C/D Eb/F
Then, back to the chorus which is now in the new key of Bb, thus:
Bb F/Bb
Oh kerry..
Eb Bb/D Cm (fast)
But don't get..
Bb F/Bb
Eb Bb Eb Bb Eb
etc. Same as the other choruses, but everything is moved up 3
half-steps.
As the song fades via the chorus, the lead plays some riffs higher up
on the neck around the 10/11th fret (for
those familiar with the CAGED system, the "C" position in the key of
Bb). Like so:
E-----13p11----------13p11--10--11-------------------------------
B-----------13--11-----------------------------------------------
G----------------------------------------------------------------
D----------------------------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------------
I probably spent too much time on this, considering the song is
largely unknown to anyone outside diehard H&O
fans. Which means no one will probably ever even search for a tab of
this song..but if you need it, here's at
least something!
