Heartbeat by The Fray

Tabs

Here are the tabs for The Fray's Heartbeat: (including 3 guitar parts)
There were no real tabs yet, so I learned this by ear, so I'm really sorry
if there are mistakes or if it's not 100%
the way how The Fray play it!

Check out my cover on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHpK3OcZu4A

(I don't own good recording gear, hope you still enjoy!!!)

------------
Guitar1:
------------

Tuning: Standard
Capo 2nd
Clean or slighty distorted

Chorus:
Chord structure:

Chord diagramE minor 7Em7 Chord diagramC majorC add9 Chord diagramG+G Chord diagramG+G sus2

e|------3---------3-------3--------3--------------------|
Chord diagramBB|------3---------3-------3--------3--------------------|
Chord diagramG+G|------0---------0-------0--------2--------------------|
Chord diagramD MajorD|------2---------2-------0--------0--------------------|
Chord diagramA augmentedA|------2---------3-------2--------0--------------------|
Chord diagramE MajorE|------0-----------------3--------3--------------------|

Recommended strumming pattern:

Chord diagramD MajorD D DU U UD DUDU

The chords change at the beginning/end of the pattern AND at the 2nd Up stroke!!!

For example: Em7: Chord diagramD MajorD D DU
Chord diagramC majorC add9: U UD DUDU
G: Chord diagramD MajorD D DU
       G: sus2: U UD DUDU

To get the feeling of the rhythm right you have to lift up your fingers a
lil at the 2nd up stroke of the pattern. That catches the tune pretty good in my opinion!
(hard to explain.. check out my cover to make sure!)

Verse:

Chords of the chorus palmmuted, downstrums only
(I let the very last 3 strokes of the Chord diagramG+G sus2 ring out.. only the Chord diagramD MajorD Chord diagramG+G Chord diagramBB and high Chord diagramE MajorE string)

....

2nd Chorus ending, right before the bridge:

play a...

Chord diagramC majorC add9
Chord diagramG+G
Chord diagramE minor 7Em7

...and let it ring out... (1 Downstrum each)

Bridge:

Chord diagramE5E5 Chord diagramG+G sus 2

e|-------------------------3------|
Chord diagramBB|-------------------------3------|
Chord diagramG+G|-------------------------2------|
Chord diagramD MajorD|------2------------------0------|
Chord diagramA augmentedA|------2-------------------------|
Chord diagramE MajorE|------0-------------------------|
    PM

stay a while on the Chord diagramE MajorE powerchord with palmmuted downstrums only, at the end play the Chord diagramG+G sus2
like above kinda open...

After that another chorus..

End the song with 1 Downstrum each on:

Chord diagramC majorC add9
Chord diagramG+G
Chord diagramE minor 7Em7

... that's it! :)

Guitar2:
------------
Tuning: Standard
distorted

Not 100% sure what's going on there during the chorus,
but I play an Chord diagramA augmentedA powerchord (as an octave higher) which sounds pretty nice:

Chorus:

Chord diagramA5A5

e|-----------------|
Chord diagramBB|-----------------|
Chord diagramG+G|------14---------|
Chord diagramD MajorD|------14---------|
Chord diagramA augmentedA|------12---------|
Chord diagramE MajorE|-----------------|

strum that chord open, lift up your fingers at certain points to catch the tune
correctly... (same pattern like guitar 1)

Verse:

e|----------------5-----------------|
Chord diagramBB|----------------------------------|
Chord diagramG+G|----6---6-7---6----6---6-7---6----| Play this 9 times until you go
Chord diagramD MajorD|----------------------------------| into the next chorus
Chord diagramA augmentedA|----------------------------------|
Chord diagramE MajorE|----------------------------------|

(at the 2nd verse this is played 11 times, if I counted correctly..)

2nd Chorus ending, right before the bridge:

1 Downstrum each on:

Chord diagramA5A5 Chord diagramA5A5 (no idea how that last chord is called, but it sounds nice played clean..)

e|------------------------|
Chord diagramBB|------------------------|
Chord diagramG+G|------14---14------13---|
Chord diagramD MajorD|------14---14------14---|
Chord diagramA augmentedA|------12---12------12---|
Chord diagramE MajorE|------------------------|

Bridge:

Chord diagramE5E5

e|--------------------------|
Chord diagramBB|--------------------------|
Chord diagramG+G|--------------------------|
Chord diagramD MajorD|------2-------------------|
Chord diagramA augmentedA|------2-------------------|
Chord diagramE MajorE|------0-------------------|
    PM

stay a while on the Chord diagramE MajorE powerchord with palmmuted downstrums only, at the end play
the Chord diagramE MajorE powerchord kinda open, right before you go into the last chorus...

Ending:

1 Downstrum each on:

Chord diagramA5A5 Chord diagramA augmentedA maj Triad (sounds nice with an open Chord diagramD MajorD in the base!!)

e|----------------------9------|
Chord diagramBB|----------------------10-----|
Chord diagramG+G|------14-----13-------9------|
Chord diagramD MajorD|------14-----14-------0------|
Chord diagramA augmentedA|------12-----12--------------|
Chord diagramE MajorE|-----------------------------|

... that's it! :)

Guitar3:
------------
Tuning: Standard
distorted

The fun part in the very beginning of the song:

e|---------------------------------------|
Chord diagramBB|----9b10--9--7~~~--9b10--9--7--5~~~----|
Chord diagramG+G|---------------------------------------|
Chord diagramD MajorD|---------------------------------------|
Chord diagramA augmentedA|---------------------------------------|
Chord diagramE MajorE|---------------------------------------|

b = bend to..
~~ = let ring

Verse (this could be part of the piano, but I clearly hear this on the recording, and it
kicks in a bit after guitar 2...) sounds sweet...
1st time: around 0:30
2nd time: around 1:34

e|---------------------------------------|
Chord diagramBB|------------10-------------------------|
Chord diagramG+G|----9h11--9----9h11--9-----------------| Repeat it 5x
Chord diagramD MajorD|---------------------------------------|
Chord diagramA augmentedA|---------------------------------------|
Chord diagramE MajorE|---------------------------------------|

h = hammer on..

In the end this is played again, including the ending of the song:

e|---------------------------------------------------------------------|
Chord diagramBB|----9b10--9--7~~~--9b10--9--7--5~~~--9b10--9--7--5-------------------|
Chord diagramG+G|---------------------------------------------------6-6b7--6--4--2~~~-|
Chord diagramD MajorD|---------------------------------------------------------------------|
Chord diagramA augmentedA|---------------------------------------------------------------------|
Chord diagramE MajorE|---------------------------------------------------------------------|

This is how I play the song. This was learned by ear! so I'm aware that it's probably
not 100%
the way how The Fray play it.

Hope you enjoy it!
