Chords with lyrics
I've only just started learning the guitar and I'm having trouble working
out the intro to "Heart of gold" by Neil Young.
I play it picking the bottom four strings using the chords
E minorEm x5 D MajorD x1 E minor 7Em7 x1 E minorEm x1
It then has a few notes picked and then played again. With my useless
ear I can't pick out those notes. Any help or corrections would be appreciated
Also would anyone know a riff to play instead of the harmonica parts.
Thanks
Mike.
HEART OF GOLD : NEIL YOUNG
Intro:
E minor 7Em7 / / / / / D MajorD / E minor 7Em7 (Play twice)
Verse:
E minorEm / C majorC / D MajorD / G+G / (Play three times)
E minor 7Em7 / / / / / G+G / C majorC / / C majorC G/BG/B Am7Am7 G+G (play twice)
For the harmonica bit, play the first line of the verse (3 times) then goto
the opening line once
Then verse two is as verse one
The only 'extra' is at the end where the vocals repeat the line:
"Keep me searching for a heart of gold, keep me searching and I'm growing old"
This is sung over the intro line again, so for this we have:
E minor 7Em7 / / / / / D MajorD / E minor 7Em7 (three times)
E minor 7Em7 / / / / / G+G / / / C majorC / / / G/BG/B Am7Am7 G+G
If you listen to the record it should be clear how the lyrics change with the
chords. The only thing to suss out is the rhythm of the strumming.
For the intro you have 6 strong strums on the E minor 7Em7 , two on D MajorD then back to E minor 7Em7
listen to the record- it's pretty straight forward.
Here are the chord shapes:
E minor 7Em7 D MajorD E minorEm C majorC G+G G/BG/B Am7Am7
022030 xx0232 022000 032010 320003 x2000x x02010

I don't know who originally wrote this, I just added the riff after "old."
I got this from the book "Neil Youn for Guitar" or something like that.
The intro is an E minorEm strum with a brief D: (each / represents a beat)
(This may actually be a E minor 7Em7)
Repeat twice:
E minorEm E minorEm E minorEm E minorEm E minorEm E minorEm D MajorD D MajorD E minorEm

OK this is what I have for Heart of Gold
Strum an E minor 7Em7 chord 6 times, then 2 on D, then one again on E minor 7Em7
Here's the E minor 7Em7 shape
EADGBE
022030
And D MajorD (in case you don't know)
EADGBE
xx0232
after the D MajorD and one on E minor 7Em7 I think he plays an E minorEm once (022000) then he picks
these notes:
D------2------
A--0h2--------
E--------0----
where you hammer on from the open A augmentedA to the second fret
Then you go back to the beginning (6 on Em7, 2 on D, 1 on Em7, 1 on E minorEm)
Hope this helps
Howard

where the stuff in the brackets [ ] is, in order:
an open A augmentedA and hammer-on to BB (5th string, 2nd fret)
the E MajorE (4th string of the E minorEm chord, 2nd fret)
