Chords with lyrics
Hey guys! Thought I'd post how I play this amazing song.
CAPO on the 2nd fret.
The shapes used are C, DmDm (or Dm7Dm7), E7, F, and Am.
Where I put Dm, a Dm7Dm7 also sounds good. It's a matter of preference, just play around with it.
Right before the chorus (on the G+G major chord), walk the bassline up from G+G to C. On the chorus it also sounds
good if you leave the G+G in the bass for the C majorC major chord.
C majorC DmDm C majorC DmDm
C majorC
Well I traced shapes in clouds and I saw things I'd never seen
DmDm
We moved like renegades down interstates, reload that magazine
C majorC
Almost killed us in that city, it was far too close to call
DmDm
So we put money in the bags, ripped wanted posters off the wall
C majorC
Say I'm wanted for the murder of a man I've never seen
DmDm
They say I shot him dead, one to his head, somewhere in Holly Springs
C majorC
May have killed a man before, but not the one that they exclaim
DmDm G+G
They'll see the barrel of my gun before they ever see me hang
C majorC E7E7 FF A minorAm
Oh if my southern heart's still pumping blood (still pumping blood)
C majorC E7E7 FF A minorAm
Well I'll bury my money in the mighty Mississippi mud (Mississippi mud)
C majorC E7E7 FF A minorAm
Oh and if my southern lungs won't let me breathe (won't let me breathe)
C majorC E7E7
Well I'll wait for the cicadas and I'll let 'em push it out for me
C majorC
Well death is always close, there's always vultures on my trail
DmDm
And the inside of this hotel's better than a prison cell
C majorC
Well that southern whiskey's stinging, singing words upon my breath
DmDm
I was worried 'bout forgetting, so I tattooed it on my chest
C majorC
I'm a southern man forever, like the wind inside the pines
DmDm
And my grandma used to sing it, oh to my brother and I
C majorC
How I wish I could get back those precious thoughts and newer skin
DmDm G+G
And we scurried out the window, 'fore the cops they busted in
Chorus
Solo (Tabbed at bottom)
C majorC
We were messengers for millions
We're a midnight masquerade
DmDm
We can walk away from all this as the town goes up in flames
C majorC
As civilians in a war, we can die right where we live
DmDm
Well you can walk away from all this, go back home to see your kids
C majorC
I've got a knife inside my boot
Yes my brother's got one too
DmDm
Yeah bring 'em on, let's have a ball
Not nothing to lose
C majorC
I've got hearts that bend and wings that shake, no one there could see
DmDm G+G
No one there was going faster, no it doesn't bother me
Chorus
Here's the solo I don't think it's exactly what Sam is doing, but it's pretty good.
I'm not sure what he does at the end so I just play a double stop somewhere.
