Sturgill Simpson ~ The Promise
Tabbed by ~Coxy~
Extraordinarily beautiful cover of a When In Rome song. Picking pattern is pretty easy to figure out.
The guitar on the actual recording is very simple so I tend to embellish it a little bit when playing it
solo (like walking down the A bass note to the F#m) when the verses get going properly. The A is hammered
onto Asus4 most times it's played but not all, the D is every time in the verse. I've played around with
some different voicings (like capping the 4th and playing it in G), for a fuller sound when going solo
but I'm pretty sure this is what's played on the record.
Chords are all straightforward:
A [x02220]
Asus4 [x02230]
F#m [244222]
D [xx0232]
Dsus4 [xx0233]
Dm [xx0231]
E [022100]

Intro: A (hammer sus4) x2
A (hammer sus4)
If you need a friend
F#M
Don't look to a stranger
D (hammer sus4)
You know in the end,
A
I'll always be there
But when you're in doubt
And when you're in danger
Take a look all around, and I'll be there
Chorus:
A
I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
F#m
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
DDm
But if you wait around a while, I'll make you fall for me
AEA
I promise, I promise you I will
When your day is through
And so is your temper
You know what to do
I'm gonna always be there
Sometimes if I shout
It's not what's intended
These words just come out
With no gripe to bear
I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
But if you wait around a while, I'll make you fall for me
I promise, I promise you I will
Bridge: AF#mDAF#mDE
I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
And if I had to walk the world, I'd make you fall for me
I promise you, I promise you I will
I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be
But if you wait around a while, I'll make you fall for me
I promise, I promise you
