The Ballad Of Hollis Brown by Rise Against

Tabs

Tuning: Half-step down

Song: The Ballad of Hollis Brown
Artist: Rise Against (Original version by Bob Dylan)
Album: Long Forgotten Songs; B-Sides & Covers

(Intro and played throughout)

the "230" bit is strummed througout this bit, but you should have been able to hear that in the song anyway

(Chord diagramA augmentedA) G1 (G2 optional)
d#|---0-----------------------------------------------------------|
Chord diagramA#A#|---3-----------------------------------------------------------|
Chord diagramF#F#|---2--------3-0------------------------------------------------|
Chord diagramC#C#|-0-------0-----------------------------------------------------|
Chord diagramG#G#|-------3-------------------------------------------------------|
Chord diagramD#D#|---------------------------------------------------------------|

This part is played every two or three repetitions of (Chord diagramA augmentedA). You should be able to hear it in the song.
(Chord diagramBB) G1 (G2 optional/playing G2 specific)
d#|-----0--------0-----0-----------|
Chord diagramA#A#|-----3--------3-----3-----------|
Chord diagramF#F#|-----2--------0-----2-----------|
Chord diagramC#C#|--------------------0-----------|
Chord diagramG#G#|---3-------2--------------------|
Chord diagramD#D#|--------------------------------|
"His cabin broken down"

(Chord diagramC majorC) G2
d#|--/10-13-----------------------------|
Chord diagramA#A#|----------10\7-----------------------|
Chord diagramF#F#|----------10\7-----------------------|
Chord diagramC#C#|-------------------------------------|
Chord diagramG#G#|-------------------------------------|
Chord diagramD#D#|-------------------------------------|

"Smile" (the really elongated one, as thought it wouldn't be obvious enough).
Play this a good bit louder, but don't break your strings!

(Chord diagramD MajorD) G1 + G2
d#|---0----------------------------------|
Chord diagramA#A#|---3-----Let Ring Each Time-----------|
Chord diagramF#F#|---2---x8-----------------------------|
Chord diagramC#C#|---0----------------------------------|
Chord diagramG#G#|---0----------------------------------|
Chord diagramD#D#|--------------------------------------|

"Every Breath you Breathe"

Play this bit really softly

(Chord diagramE MajorE) G1
d#|--2-2-2-3-2-----------0-------0----------|
Chord diagramA#A#|--3-3-3-3-3-------------3--------3-------|
Chord diagramF#F#|--2---------2----------------------------|
Chord diagramC#C#|--0----------0------0--------0-----------| x2
Chord diagramG#G#|-----------------3---------2-------------|
Chord diagramD#D#|-----------------------------------------|

 G2
d#|--------15\14--12\10-----------------|

Chord diagramF#F#|-------------------------------------|
Chord diagramC#C#|-------------------------------------|
Chord diagramG#G#|-------------------------------------|
Chord diagramD#D#|-------------------------------------|
After the soft bit:

(Chord diagramFF) G1
d#|--0----------------------------------|
Chord diagramA#A#|--3----------------------------------|
Chord diagramF#F#|--2---Strum!-------------------------|
Chord diagramC#C#|--0----------------------------------|

G2 (Bend so that it's like a quarter-step off key)

Chord diagramF#F#|--7--Strum!--------------------------|
Chord diagramC#C#|--7----------------------------------|
Chord diagramG#G#|-------------------------------------|
Chord diagramD#D#|-------------------------------------|

There's an extra guitar that comes in at the first "mare" and it goes something like this:
G3
d#|------------------------------------------------|
Chord diagramA#A#|-----12-10---12-10----12-10---------------------|
Chord diagramF#F#|----------10-------10-------10----12--12--------|
Chord diagramC#C#|---12--------------------------14---14--12~-----|
Chord diagramG#G#|------------------------------------------------|
Chord diagramD#D#|------------------------------------------------|
But I'm not sure. It sounds weird and off-key.

After "Cares"
G3

Go Back to (Chord diagramFF) but without the third guitar until:

(H)

Arpeggiate (play the individual notes) of these guys at random (improvising the pattern generally sounds fine)

Chord diagramD#D#|--------------------------------------|

Tabber's Notes:

Even though I've tabbed this in Chord diagramD#D# Standard (D#,G#,C#,F#,A#,D#) it can be played in Drop Chord diagramC#C# (Drop Chord diagramD MajorD and a
half-step down) by just adding in the low Chord diagramC#C# where applicable, such as the whole of (Chord diagramD MajorD), but I don't think it
needs the extra low-end, personally.

On the recording, the guitar sounds pretty bright, but I prefer to play this on a warm tone, but do
as you please, and use whatever tone.

All of this picking and stuff is fairly loose, so you don't have to be SUPER strict on yourself.
