Joe Pug – ‘How Good You Are’
From the record “Messenger”
Words and music by Joe Pug
CAPO 2
Note 1: *riff – the riff in the intro and chorus is simply lifting off of the 2nd string
and then the third string on both the [A minorAm] and the [Fmaj7Fmaj7] before transitioning to [C/GC/G].
So, on the [A minorAm], play the chord as usual, then play it with the second string open,
then play 2-0 on the third string, and do the exact same thing on the [Fmaj7Fmaj7] before
playing the [C/GC/G].
Note 2: the verses consist of a continuous [A minorAm] [G+G] [C/GC/G] [G+G] [A minorAm] [G+G] [C/GC/G] pattern, in
which the [G+G] is played only on the fifth and sixth strings and is stroked for just one
quick beat each time you transition between [A minorAm] and [C/GC/G]. Listen to get the timing.
Chords used (with capo on 2):
[A minorAm]: 0-1-2-2-0-x----|
[Fmaj7Fmaj7]: 0-1-2-3-3-x-|
[C/GC/G]: 0-1-0-2-3-3---|
[G+G]: x-x-x-o-2-3-----|
INTRO: [A minorAm] [Fmaj7Fmaj7] [C/GC/G] [C/GC/G] (w/ *riff) x2
W/ HARMONICA:
[A minorAm] [Fmaj7Fmaj7] [C/GC/G]
[Fmaj7Fmaj7] [A minorAm] [C/GC/G]
[C/GC/G] [A minorAm]
[C/GC/G] [A minorAm]
[Fmaj7Fmaj7] [A minorAm] [C/GC/G]
[G+G] [A minorAm] I was [G+G] born into A augmentedA [C/GC/G] circus [G+G] [A minorAm]
But I ran [G+G] off to [C/GC/G] join a home [G+G] [A minorAm]
They said [G+G] that [C/GC/G] I was worthless
That my [Fmaj7Fmaj7] family died un[C/GC/G]known
[G+G] [A minorAm]
So it [G+G] gets, and so it [C/GC/G]goes [G+G] [A minorAm]
That’s what [G+G] you get [C/GC/G] I suppose
[G+G] [A minorAm]
For [G+G] wanting something [C/GC/G] more
Than a [Fmaj7Fmaj7] life of walking [C/GC/G] rows
[G+G] [A minorAm] [G+G] [C/GC/G]
[Fmaj7Fmaj7] [A minorAm] [C/GC/G]
[C/GC/G] [A minorAm]
[C/GC/G] [A minorAm]
[Fmaj7Fmaj7] [A minorAm] [C/GC/G]
[G+G] [A minorAm] All the [C/GC/G] Christians left behind [G+G] [A minorAm]
At the [G+G] cross[C/GC/G]roads of your town [G+G] [A minorAm]
Ah, [G+G] they’re playing truth or [C/GC/G] dare
Beneath [Fmaj7Fmaj7] the sanctuary [C/GC/G] now
[G+G] [A minorAm]
Some wish [G+G] they [C/GC/G] had the truth [G+G] [A minorAm]
Some wish [G+G] they [C/GC/G] had the gold [G+G] [A minorAm]
But they’re [G+G] ain’t no sense in [C/GC/G] leaving
From the [Fmaj7Fmaj7] only game you [C/GC/G] know
CHORUS
[A minorAm] [Fmaj7Fmaj7] [C/GC/G] (w/ *riff)
[C/GC/G] Oh I know how good you are
How [A minorAm] hard it is [Fmaj7Fmaj7] [C/GC/G]
[C/GC/G] How good you are
[A minorAm] [Fmaj7Fmaj7] [C/GC/G] (w/ *riff)
[Fmaj7Fmaj7] [A minorAm] [C/GC/G]
[C/GC/G] [A minorAm]
[C/GC/G] [A minorAm]
[Fmaj7Fmaj7] [A minorAm] [C/GC/G]
[G+G] [A minorAm] There’s A augmentedA [G+G] butler in [C/GC/G] your hallway [G+G] [A minorAm]
He is [G+G] troublesome [C/GC/G] and old [G+G] [A minorAm]
He repeats [G+G] the [C/GC/G] word alive
To de[Fmaj7Fmaj7]scribe your family [C/GC/G] gold
[G+G] [A minorAm]
You ask [G+G] him [C/GC/G] please to go [G+G] [A minorAm]
But there’s one [G+G] thing you [C/GC/G] don’t know [G+G] [A minorAm]
He [G+G] carved [C/GC/G] April 7th, ‘65
Into the [Fmaj7Fmaj7] side of your pia[C/GC/G]no
CHORUS
[A minorAm] [Fmaj7Fmaj7] [C/GC/G] (w/ *riff)
[C/GC/G] Oh I know how good you are
How [A minorAm] hard it is [Fmaj7Fmaj7] [C/GC/G]
[C/GC/G] How good you are
[A minorAm] [Fmaj7Fmaj7] [C/GC/G] (w/ *riff)
[Fmaj7Fmaj7] [A minorAm] [C/GC/G]
[C/GC/G] [A minorAm]
[C/GC/G] [A minorAm]
[Fmaj7Fmaj7] [A minorAm] [C/GC/G]
[G+G] [A minorAm] Everything that [G+G] you were [C/GC/G] meant for [G+G] [A minorAm]
Everything that [G+G] you were [C/GC/G] born to do [G+G] [A minorAm]
Does not [G+G] need [C/GC/G] you to do it
Someone else was [Fmaj7Fmaj7] born to do it [C/GC/G] too
[G+G] [A minorAm]
Now like A augmentedA [G+G] half [C/GC/G] grown man [G+G] [A minorAm]
You barely [G+G] learn [C/GC/G] how to stand [G+G] [A minorAm]
If you [G+G] shut up [C/GC/G] with what you’ve chosen
You’ll hear [Fmaj7Fmaj7] something choosing [C/GC/G] you
CHORUS
[A minorAm] [Fmaj7Fmaj7] [C/GC/G] (w/ *riff)
[C/GC/G] Oh I know how good you are
How [A minorAm] hard it is [Fmaj7Fmaj7] [C/GC/G]
[C/GC/G] How good you are
