[G+G]They sat at each end of the couch,
and [B minorBm]watched as the fire burned down.
So [A minorAm]quiet on this winter's night,
[walk] Not a [C majorC]house-light on for [D MajorD]miles around.
Then he [G+G]said, "I think I'll fill the stove.
[B minorBm]It's getting time for bed."
[A minorAm]She looked up. "I think I'll have some wine.
How 'bout [C majorC]you?" she asked, and [D MajorD] he declined.
[G+G] "Warren," she said, "Maybe just [B minorBm]for tonight,
let's [A minorAm] fill the stove with birches
and [C majorC] watch as the fire [D MajorD] burns bright.
[G+G] How long has it been?
It's [B minorBm] been quite a while.
[A minorAm] Pour yourself half a glass and
[C majorC] stay with me a [D MajorD] little while."
And [G+G] Warren, he shook his head
as if [B minorBm] she'd made some kind of joke.
[A minorAm]"Birches? On a winter night?
[C majorC] No, we'll fill the [D MajorD] stove with oak.
[G+G]Oak will burn as long and hot
as a [B minorBm] July afternoon.
[A minorAm] Birch will burn [C majorC] itself out
by the [D MajorD] rising of the moon.
[G+G] And you hate a cold house same as me.
[B minorBm] A minorAm I right or not?"
[A minorAm]"All right, all right that's [C majorC]true,"
she said [D MajorD]"It was just a thought."
Then she said,[G+G]"Warren, you do look tired.
Maybe [B minorBm] you should go up to bed.
[A minorAm] I'll take care of the wood tonight."
[C majorC] "Oak," he told her. [D MajorD] "Oak," she said.
[G+G]She listened to his footsteps
as he [B minorBm] climbed up the stairs.
Then she [A minorAm]pulled a sweater on her and
[C majorC] set her wine glass [D MajorD] on a chair.
She [G+G] walked down cellar to the woodbox.
It was [B minorBm] cold as an ice chest.
Then [A minorAm] climbed back up with [C majorC] four logs,
each as white as a [D MajorD] wedding dress.
And she [G+G]filled the stove and poured the wine,
then she [B minorBm] sat down on the floor.
[A minorAm]She curled her legs beneath her,
[C majorC] as the fire sprang to [D MajorD] life once more.
And it [G+G]filled the room with it's hungry light,
and it [B minorBm] cracked as it drew air.
And the [A minorAm] shadows danced a [C majorC]jittery waltz
like no one else was [D MajorD] there.
She [G+G] stood up in the heat, and
she [B minorBm] twirled around the room.
And the [A minorAm] shadows, they
saw [C majorC] nothing but a young girl on her [D MajorD]honeymoon.
And she [G+G] knew the time, it would be short
soon the [B minorBm] fire would start to fade.
She [A minorAm] thought of heat, she [C majorC] thought of time.
She [D MajorD] called it an even [G+G] trade.
