THE COLD ACRE - Augie March

Tuning: Standard

So, deceptively the intro/verse just sits on a Bm while the lead guitar plays a little lick that seems to
move between a Bm arpeggio and an A major arpeggio. I'm almost certain that the whole band just sits on the Bm
while the lead does its thing.

However I decided it sounded better with one guitar in the verses to alternate between Bm and F#m.
You can either or come up with your own idea on what sounds best for you.

INTRO:

Bm

          Bm
There's a place I've been told

                          F#m
And when I grow old I may go there

          Bm
I've been told that my family's bones

                  F#m
May lie under the snow there

               D F#m
With my little bag, with my little dog

    G
Who sleeps on my chest

                               A
When he can't find a hole in a log

       F#m G
When I go, my dog will know

To leave his old fellow and find a new pillow

A
Far from the chill of the cold acre

*INTRO*

              Bm
Now there's a Hillydale here and a Lilydale there

              F#m Bm
Where there's joy in the living, voices that ring in the air

 F#m D
I'd stay there but sooner or later I'd have to go

              F#m G
Where I don't know but when a dog knows it's on him

                           A F#m G
He doesn't ask why he just goes, when I go my bones will know

                                               A
To pick up and follow the wagon that rolls on the cold acre

CHORUS:
              D F#m
My heart is a cold acre and my chest is a cold acre

        G A
I don't grow any good anymore though I've seeded my soul

With all kinds of love, that it aches so

*SOLO OVER VERSE*

This may be with an octave pedal or just playing octaves but it sounds fine without
e|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|15~-15/17-15-14-10-7-10-12--7-10-14--10-8-7--7-10-12--12-10-8-7-10--7-8/10-8-7-|
G|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

         Bm
Though I wake from them mouthing

                          F#m
They leave me not able to talk

          Bm
All these dreams are not nightmares

                                 F#m
But realms I've been choosing to walk

               D F#m
With my little bag, with my little dog

    G A
Who rests on my stomach and barks at the oncoming fog

             F#m G
O but when I go with my lot in tow

Like a vampire carry my piece in the earth

A
To the place of my death to the plots of my birth

CHORUS:
              D F#m
My heart is a cold acre, in my chest is a cold acre

        G A
I don't grow any good anymore though I've seeded my soul

                                            D
With all kinds of love that don't grow in a cold acre

           F#m
Nothing grows in a cold acre

        G
I don't grow any good anymore from the bad

            A
But there's one that you have, one that you had

  F#m G
O grow, grow, grow, grow, grow

                         A
And plant me in the only place I know that's the cold acre
