Guitar 1 - Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb (Distorted w/EBow, reverb, and delay) Guitar 2 - Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb (Distorted) Guitar 3 - Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb (Distorted) This one of the Minutes to Midnight songs that's still tuned down half a step. For such a heavy song, this one's actually pretty light on the guitar layering. Guitars 2 and 3 basically double each other the entire time (with a couple exceptions), and Guitar 1 just comes in from time to time with the EBow figure. You don't absolutely NEED an EBow to play Guitar 1's part, there are a couple ways to do it. One is to use some kind of sustain system (for example, a guitar equipped with a Fernandes Sustainer, which Brad uses live on this song), you can use an overdrive pedal on top of your regular distortion to increase your sustain (which is what I do), or you can use a compressor pedal with the sustain knob turned way up. The last 2 options are VERY prone to feedback though, so you'll need to have good muting technique to keep the other strings from vibrating. A note on Guitar 1, since with the EBow, you never pick the string, you're either sliding between every note or doing hammerons/pulloffs, but I haven't notated that just because it makes things look really cluttered. Just start with your index finger on the 5th fret, and use your index and ring fingers to either slide or hammer-on/pulloff between each note (there's a couple good live videos that show how Brad does it). One other note, on all the muted strums (x's) in this song, you'll want to fret a powerchord at the 2nd fret with your index finger, and then lightly rest your middle and ring fingers on the strings to mute the sound. This way, you get the muted notes, but they still have a defined pitch to them (it's basically doing a palm mute but with your fretting hand). On the live version of this track, Brad plays Guitar 1 when it appears, and Guitar 2 when it doesn't. Mike plays Guitar 2, occasionally jumping to Guitar 3 for the muted strums where Guitar 2 isn't playing (Intro Part 3, for example).
