You Oughta Know Intro by Jonathan Coulton

You Oughta Know tab by Jonathan Coulton

Intro

This is Joco's cover of Alanis Morisette's "You Oughta Know", which is a complicated acoustic
arrangement that involves some sweet harmonized vocals.

While I'd say the rhythm for Joco's finger picking can be hard to understand and replicate here,
it's a lot easier to play if you focus on the bottom two droning notes that act as consistent
eighth beats which help push along each measure's arpeggio. Also learn the chords! your fingers
won't honestly move much between measures outside of the chorus, so it really helps.

The good news is once you nail down the main verse's rhythm you've basically nailed the picking
for the rest of the arrangement. Hopefully this helps!

[Pre-Chorus]

(which is just a repeat of verse A with different vocals and an alternate ending)

Repeat the first three measures of the pre-chorus, and go right into this

[Chorus]

(Honestly the most complicated part due to its frequent chord changes and variances)

  Gsusno5 G5 Fmaj9b5/G D#/E

                                                1 + 2 e + 3 + a 4 e + a
of the mess... ...went away

Much like the pre-chorus, repeat the first three measure but replace the fourth measure with this

  C7 D#7no5 D#

B|----------------4--------------4------------|---4-----------4------------------|
G|--------6--------------6----------------6---|---------4------------------------|
D|--------5----------5--------5-----------5---|------5-----------5---------------|
A|---6---------6---------6------------6-------|---6--------6---------6-----------|
E|--------------------------------------------|----------------------------------|
     1 + 2 e + 3 + a 4 + 1 + a 2 e + 3 + 4
   You... You... You... ...'oughta know.

Then go right back into the intro.
that's pretty much it, save for a few variances in the picking and finger positions.
