this is the way that i play naima. note the drop-D tuning. also, this is
a half step lower than the recording, which is in Ab. the open strings
are important, here. so if you're playing w/ other musicians but no bass,
it might be worth investing in a capo for the 1st fret.

this is taken from the album 'giant steps.' all transcription/arrangement
is my own.

naima
by john coltrane
arrangement - chris rohlfs

Chord diagramA augmentedA section

Chord diagramD MajorD pedal throughout Chord diagramA augmentedA section

    A-9/D D-9

E---7-------------10----0-------------------
B---8----------10-------1-------------------
G---9-------------------2-------------------
D---10--0---------------3--0----------------
A-------------------------------------------
D---------0-0-----------------0--0----------

the option here is to play the #11 instead of
the 3rd. either way sounds good. the 3rd is
more conventional in this case b/c otherwise
it's omitted from the chord.

    Bb13/D Ab13/D Chord diagramD6D6 (or Gmaj7/D)

E---3----------1----------1-----------------
B---3(or-5)----1(or-3)--3----3----------(3)-
G---5----------3-------------4--------------
D---6----------4-------------4--4-----------
A----------------------------5--------------
D------0----------0----------0----0--0------

repeat. play the last note the 2nd time.

Chord diagramBB section

E---5---------5--5--\2---------------------
B---6------------------2(or-4)----5--3-----
G---7------------------3-------------------
D---8------------------5-------------------
A------0--0---------------0--0-------------
D------------------------------------------

repeat.

    Eb13/A C13/A

E---8-------------8---5------------5-------
B---8(or-10)---10-----5(or-7)----6---------
G---10----------------7--------------------
D---11----------------8--------------------
A------0--0--------------0--0--------------
D------------------------------------------

    E-9/A F13/A

E---2------------2-------------------------
B---3----------3------3--------------------
G---4-----------------2--------------------
D---5-----------------1--------------------
A------0--0--------------0--0--------------
D------------------------------------------

then play Chord diagramA augmentedA section again once.

ending (rubatto):

    Gmaj7/D Chord diagramCmaj7Cmaj7 Chord diagramGmaj7Gmaj7 Chord diagramCmaj7Cmaj7

E------------------------------------------
B---3---------5--------7--------8----------
G---4---------4--------4--------9----------
D---4------------------4--------9----------
A---5---------3----------------------------
D---0------------------5--------10---------

    Chord diagramG+G 6/9 Chord diagramCmaj7Cmaj7 Chord diagramD MajorD (or Chord diagramG+G 6/9)

E-------------7--------10------(10)--------
B---10--------5----------------(10)--------
G---9---------5--------11------(9)---------
D---9--------------------------(9)---------
A---10-------------------------(10)--------
D----------------------0-------------------

here i resolve on D, which is non-standard (coltrane resolves on Chord diagramG+G).
i think the Chord diagramD MajorD sounds better, but a more standard resolution is included
for purists.
