Coldplay - 'Yellow'
tabbed by reg
My mate's brother showed me how to play this - God knows how he worked it
out - but it sounds pretty accurate so i reckon it's worth sharing!
The Acoustic Part:
The first thing you need to do is re-tune the strings to E A B G B D#;
this then allows you to play the following chords (the names of which may
well be wrong!):
Bmaj Badd11 Fm7add11
D#|----0----|----0----|----0----|----0----|----0----|----1----|
B |----0----|----0----|----2----|----0----|----0----|----0----|
G |----8----|----9----|----3----|----1----|----2----|----2----|
B |----0----|----0----|----4----|----0----|----2----|----2----|
A |----9----|----9----|----4----|----2----|----x----|----x----|
E |----7----|----7----|----2----|----0----|----2----|----2----|
(These are easier to play if you use your thumb to fret the notes on the E
string)
And the song goes:
Intro: [B, Badd11] (x2)
Verse: [B, F#6, Emaj7] (x4)
Chorus: [Emaj7, G6] (x3), then Emaj7
Verse
Chorus
Verse
Middle: (same chords as verse progression; play twice)
Outro: B, F#m7add11, Emaj7
The Electric Part:
The bit on the electric guitar is (supposedly) in standard tuning
(ie. E A D G B E), and therefore, to play along with the chords above, the
chords need to be played as below (not sure if these are right):
Bmaj Badd11 Fm7add11
E |----x----|----0----|----2----|----0----|----4----|----2----|
B |----4----|----4----|----4----|----0----|----4----|----2----|
G |----4----|----4----|----3----|----1----|----4----|----2----|
D |----4----|----4----|----4----|----1----|----6----|----2----|
A |----2----|----2----|----x----|----2----|----6----|----2----|
E |----x----|----x----|----2----|----0----|----4----|----2----|
In addition, below is the riff used in between sections of the song:
(N.B. b = bend string; r = release bend; ~ = keep string bent;
/ & \ = slide up/down)

And (finally!) this is the little lick that gets played over the chorus:

Reg did a great job with this, but after watching Chris play it, the only
change I would make is that occasionally he uses an E9 instead of E7. I
have seen them a few times and it seems improvisatory; just kind of
throws it in, usually when the rest of| the band is playing too; he always
uses the maj7 in the solo par
